Cutting trees down to use as fuel in energy production–known as biomass energy or bioenergy–is one of the most counterproductive things we can do if our goal is clean air and a livable planet. Despite this reality, policymakers around the world have invested heavily in bioenergy. Nowhere is this more true than in the European Union, where bioenergy policies in the UK and other member states enable billions in subsidies each year to flow to the balance sheets of large utility companies, padding their profits and financing the conversion of old coal-fired power plants to burn wood.
"Dark Waters" screened in Wilmington, N.C. to a sold out crowd eager to learn more about the story surrounding a West Virginia town that was plagued by the same chemical infested waters that we experience here in Southeastern North Carolina. With a powerful press conference before the film, and a panel discussion including Actor/Producer Mark Ruffalo himself, a stunned crowd watched as this tale hit all to closely to home... #DarkWaters
Cape Fear Surfrider Foundation coordinated with the Town of Carolina Beach to partake in a dune re-building program using recycled Christmas trees. This yearly project helps to rebuild natural habitat, protect ocean front property, and divert the
old trees from the landfill.
